Accessibility
This is the official accessibility statement for Burford Woodcraft. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email us on enquiries@burford-woodcraft.co.uk.
At Burford Woodcraft, we are very conscious of accessibility issues and have striven to create a website which is usable by as many different people as possible, regardless of disability or technologies employed.
Testing
With regard to the Disability Discrimination Act 1998 and its specific reference to website accessibility, all web pages on this site have been tested against the priority 1, 2 and 3 of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and comply in the majority of areas.
However, due to the use of third party software (namely Actinic) which enables the secure collection and processing of orders made via our website, some elements of the WCAG cannot be met at this time. Specifically, this includes coding language validation, as although all pages aim to meet the standards of XHTML 1.0 Transitional, unfortunately, they do not entirely validate as such. The failure, however, is minimal and should not affect the use of our website by disabled visitors in any practical sense. We will of course, rectify this situation as soon as we are able to do so.
Please also bear in mind that many of the W3C guidelines are intentionally vague and often cannot really be tested against automatically in any case.
With regard to cross-browser compatibility, this website has been tested on (and found to meet requirements ably) the following web browsers: IBM Home Page Reader v 3.0; Internet Explorer v 5.0, v 5.5 and v 6.0; Safari for the Apple Macintosh; Mozilla Firefox v 1.0; Opera; and Netscape v 7.0.
Presentation and layout
For visual presentation, CSS 2.1 is used on this site, but page content can still be read without issue should cascading stylesheets (CSS) be switched off or unsupported in the web browser.
All images used on this site (except those used purely for layout - i.e. spacers) have been given descriptive ALT attributes to cater for those using screen readers or those with images switched off or unsupported in their web browser.
Where unfamiliar abbreviations and acronyms have been used on this website, appropriate TITLE tags have been added by way of explanation. The presence of this explanation is highlighted by a dotted underline.
Font sizes used on this site are relative and text size can be adjusted (for those using a wheel mouse) by holding down CTRL on the keyboard and moving the mouse wheel accordingly. For those without a wheel mouse, sizes can be increased or decreased via the browser's text size adjustment option in the usual manner.
This site utilises print stylesheets, ensuring (for those with CSS enabled) that all pages are printer friendly.
Navigation, links and visitor interaction
Tab indexing and access keys (see later) have been used on this site (wherever possible and appropriate) in order to make navigation without the use of a mouse viable.
Visitors using screen readers (or those using their keyboard's TAB key to jump through links) have the option of being able to skip over the navigation on any page straight into its main content.
Adjacent links (including navigation) have been separated by non-link text, giving an audiable difference between elements where screen readers are used.
Where required, links employ TITLE attributes to describe the destination in greater detail. Even where these attributes are not used, links are all written in such a way so as to still make sense, even out of context.
All links on this site open in the same window. No pages will appear as 'pop-ups'. No external windows are ever spawned.
The forms used on this website have been created to utilise tab indexing and element labelling (wherever possible), so that mouse-less users should be able to complete an online form by use of their keyboard only. However, please note that due to the contraints of the third party software we employ for shopping online, there are some areas of this website where tab indexing and labelling of form elements has not been achievable at this stage.
Access keys
Access keys offer a quick and easy method of reaching important information on this site. The choice of pages given an individual access key on this website is based on Government recommendations and is as follows:
S - Skip over navigation to start of content
1 - Home page
2 - Focus
3 - Site map
4 - Search shop
5 - About buying online
8 - Terms and conditions
9 - Contact us
0 - Access key details
Most browsers will support this method of jumping to specific links. With Windows-based browsers, you should be able to press and hold ALT + the relevant access key (as listed above). With Macintosh computers, press CTRL + the access key required.
